When I started making soy candles, one important aspect I didn’t pay much attention to, was that irrespective of me using the best quality raw materials to make them, were they burning efficiently ? The answer was no. On further research I understood that, there are some candle basics that need to be followed in order to utilize the candle to its maximum. I also realised that these are very tiny measures to ensure a clean burning candle, but still, not many of us know these candle basics to achieve the same. Let’s dive into it.
1. Trim your wicks regularly It’s as basic as that! Trimming allows your wicks to have a cleaner and brighter burn. As long as you trim them regularly, it will ensure that the candle burns efficiently and evenly as well. A trimmed wick not only reduces soot, but will also preserve the candle . If you don’t trim your wicks regularly, you run the risk of causing tunneling in candles, which happens when your wick is too long and it’s big flame causes the candle to become excessively hot and in turn makes extra wax burn in the closest area to the flame.
2. Get commited to the flame : You read that right ! While burning the candle initially always make sure that your burn it until the entire layer of wax on top is evenly melted, this in candle terms is known as achieving full melt pool. If you end up melting down the wax in the center near the wick while the outer edges won’t burn down because they don’t have time to get all hot and melty. A total waste of wax, I tell you!
3. Cap your burn time at four hours : This one’s for safety. A few unlucky customers have reported candles that explode, after being left to burn for too long. Ignoring this recommendation means you risk not only losing your candle, but also possibly your entire house and all your worldly possessions too. Better safe than sorry!
